We are LBGTeachers@TXST
Started in the Fall of 2019, we aim to represent members of the LGBT community and other underrepresented groups seeking to enter the field of education. Our intention is to provide representation for minority students in order to encourage them to continue their educations in a supportive environment. We meet every other Tuesday at 6PM! |
What we offer |
Ally Training |
Reading Series |
Although our group is directed towards those in the LGBT community, we believe that sensitivity training teaches valuable lessons to everybody. Alongside this, we believe that its place on a resume will normalize LGBT identities in the classroom. This is why we will partner with the university to provide ally training.
CommunityAs described in some of our previous readings, being an educator that is also a member of the LGBT community can be quite lonely. Ostracism keeps many teachers silent about their identities in their places of work. Our intention is to create a social safety net before and after leaving Texas State.

We read both books and articles over issues in education, LGBT issues, and things that fall in between. We will discuss these at the second meeting of the month. This is to further our understanding of the issues that face the future of education. The February reading assignment is "One in Ten" by Kevin Jennings.
Skill DevelopmentWhile representation encourages students, it isn't enough to simply be present. We are currently seeking out curriculum from organizations like GLSEN and other education-focused organizations. If you have any ideas about a skill that should be taught in a meeting, don't hesitate to reach out!
